FOOD
SECURITY
We strongly promote planting vegetables to supplement the traditional foods, and to provide nutritional and secure foods. Many families now produce enough vegetables to help them through a bad drought.
Subsistence Vegetables The staple food in the area is maize, millet and sorghum. These crops are planted in the summer months, harvested a few months later and need to sustain people throughout the year. No other crops are traditionally grown. This inherently unbalanced and nutrient poor diet is further compromised by frequent crops failures due to drought or poor farming practices. Vegetables supplement the traditional foods and provide nutritional and secure foods.
